MagSafe power banks, explained: how magnetic charging works — and 5K vs 10K

It snaps to the back of your phone and charges with no cable, no case off. Here's how magnetic charging actually works, and which size fits your day — from £14.80.

A magnetic power bank is the neatest fix for a dying battery: no trailing cable, no fumbling for a port. It clicks onto the back of your phone and tops it up while you keep scrolling. The only real decision is capacity — so here's how it works, and whether you want 5,000mAh or 10,000mAh.

The short version

A magnetic (MagSafe-style) power bank uses a ring of magnets to snap onto the back of a compatible phone and charge it wirelessly — no cable needed. Choose 5,000mAh (about one full charge, lightest, £14.80) for daily carry, or 10,000mAh (about two charges, £22.49) for travel and long days.

01How magnetic charging works

Inside the pack is a ring of magnets that lines up perfectly with the magnets built into modern phones, so it snaps into the right spot every time. Once aligned, a wireless charging coil transfers power through the glass — no plug, no port. Because it's held on by magnets, you can carry on using the phone, pocket it, or prop it up while it charges. It's charging that just follows your phone around.

02Wireless and wired, when you need speed

Magnetic charging is about convenience, and it's a little gentler and slower than a cable. That's why a good pack also has a USB-C port: plug in for a faster top-up when you're in a hurry, or to charge a second device at the same time. The same port refills the power bank itself. Snap-on when you're relaxed, plug in when you're rushing.

Best with iPhone 12 and newer, which have the magnets built in. On Android or older phones it still charges wirelessly if they support Qi — add a magnetic ring or case for the satisfying snap, or just use the USB-C cable.

035K vs 10K: which capacity?

It comes down to how far from a plug you tend to be. More capacity means more charges but a little more weight — here's the honest trade:

Capacity Roughly gets you Best for
5,000mAh ~1 full phone charge Daily carry, nights out — lightest & most pocketable
10,000mAh ~2 full charges Travel, festivals, long days away from a plug

04Does it work through a case?

Through a thin case, yes — the magnets are strong enough to hold and charge through most slim cases, and best of all through a MagSafe-compatible case with its own magnet ring. Very thick, rugged or metal cases can weaken the grip or block wireless charging, so if you run a heavy-duty case, look for one that's magnet-ready — or drop to the USB-C cable.

The best power bank is the one you'll actually carry. Magnetic and pocket-sized wins over powerful-but-left-at-home.

Frequently asked

Do magnetic power banks work with Android phones?

They charge any phone that supports Qi wireless charging. The magnetic snap is designed for iPhone 12 and newer, which have built-in magnets; on Android, add a magnetic ring or MagSafe-compatible case for the snap, or simply use the built-in USB-C cable.

How many times will it charge my phone?

As a rough guide, a 5,000mAh pack gives about one full phone charge and a 10,000mAh pack about two. Exact figures depend on your phone's battery size and wireless charging losses, so treat these as real-world estimates.

Can I use my phone while it charges on the pack?

Yes. Because the pack is held on magnetically, you can keep scrolling, take calls or prop the phone up while it charges — the power bank simply travels with the phone.

Is wireless charging slower than using a cable?

Slightly. Magnetic wireless charging is gentler and a little slower than a wired connection, which is why these packs also include a USB-C port — plug in when you need the fastest possible top-up.
